Black Widows in Glendale Hillside Yards: Where They Hide

Warm, dry, and undisturbed

Black widows are common in Glendale's foothill and hillside yards, and they want the same three things: warm, dark, and undisturbed, close to the ground. The hotter and drier the season, the more active they get, which is why late spring through fall is peak widow season here.

They are venomous, though bites are rare when nests are cleared. The risk is that they set up near doors, garages, and play areas.

Where they hide

In a Glendale yard, check woodpiles and firewood, the weep holes and voids in block walls, water meter and irrigation boxes, under patio furniture and BBQs, garage and shed corners, and around pool equipment. Widows build messy, strong webs low to the ground and leave round, papery egg sacs that restart the problem if left alone.

Because widows follow their food, a yard full of spiders usually has plenty of other insects for them to hunt.

How to keep them down

Clear woodpiles and clutter away from the house, knock down webs and egg sacs around eaves and corners, and seal gaps. A local exterminator adds a treated harborage and a residual perimeter barrier, and reduces the ants, roaches, and flies the widows feed on so they do not simply return.
